Porsche has taken the wraps off the car that it will campaign in the upcoming Formula E season.
The 99X Electric continues Porsche’s convention of triple-digit designations for its competition machinery, and according to the team, emphasizes the importance of the project by using the highest number – 9 – twice, with the X representing “the forward-looking approach and prototype racing.” It will be raced under the Porsche TAG Heuer Formula E Team banner.
“Today is an important day,” said Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport and Group Motorsport Volkswagen AG.
“With the premiere of the Porsche 99X Electric, we are taking a big step towards the Porsche works entry in Formula E. I am really proud of our team, which has shown a high level of commitment to the Formula E project. Now I am looking forward to seeing the Porsche 99X Electric on the racetrack.”
The car uses Formula E’s spec Gen II chassis, and leans on a powertrain derived from Porsche’s all-electric Taycan model. It will make its public debut when FE group testing begins in October in Valencia with drivers Neel Jani and Andre Lotterer.
