Joey Logano’s Team Penske Mustang will start from the pole in the FireKeepers 400 in the backyard of the Ford Motor Company, at Michigan International Speedway.
Logano, the 20th driver to make a qualifying attempt Saturday afternoon, earned the top spot with a lap of 187.139 mph (38.474 seconds). The pole is Logano’s second of the season and his fourth at Michigan where he has two NASCAR Cup Series wins.
“It’s such a huge advantage to be on the front row here at Michigan and how important it is in Ford’s backyard and Roger’s [Penske] backyard to have a good run here,” said Logano of his 22nd career pole. “We actually went to dinner with Edsel [Ford II] and he told all of us Ford drivers how important it was to have a victory here. So, glad we can deliver so far. Hopefully in the race this Shell / Pennzoil Ford has as much speed and handling to be able to stay up there.”
Logano will be joined on the front row by fellow Ford driver Aric Almirola. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver has now qualified on the front row five times this season, clocking in at 187.047 mph.
Kevin Harvick (186.908 mph), Denny Hamlin (186.887 mph), and Clint Bowyer (186.775 mph) completed the top five. Harvick and Bowyer split the races at Michigan last season.
Filling out the rest of the top 10 was Paul Menard (186.659 mph), Kurt Busch (186.577 mph), Brad Keselowski (186.504 mph), Daniel Suarez (186.471 mph), and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (186.432 mph).
Richard Childress Racing teammates Daniel Hemric and Austin Dillon will line up in row six as they qualified 11th and 12th.
Point leader Kyle Busch will come from the 15th position while his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. qualified 16th. Truex had his engineer ejected for the rest of the weekend after the No. 19 Toyota failed inspection Saturday morning twice. Truex will also lose practice time when the series heads to Sonoma in two weeks.
Further back in the field will be Chase Elliott (17th), Jimmie Johnson (19th), Alex Bowman (20th), William Byron (21st), and Kyle Larson (22nd).
