Clint Bowyer (photo above) and Ryan Newman had contact on track at Charlotte Motor Speedway, then on pit road when Bowyer threw punches after Saturday night’s All-Star Race.

Neither driver won the $1 million exhibition race or finished near the top of the leaderboard. Bowyer, who started from the pole, wound up 12th, and Newman was 13th, having damaged his car earlier in the night.

“I don’t know what the hell his beef was,” Bowyer told FOX Sports 1 in the garage. “I thought he was a lap down. Our day was over. We lost track position there and got sideways, crossed up, and basically [were] just buying time there and seeing if something was going to happen at the end. They got four-wide off (Turn) 4 … Hell, I thought he was a lap down. I checked up, and he ran into my left rear, and that was the last I saw of him.

“Then after the race, he comes and runs into my back and turns me all around and I pull up next to him, and he dumps me into (Turn) 4. Where I come from, you get poked in the nose for that. It’s what he got.”

After stopping on pit road, Bowyer exited his car, still with his helmet on, and ran over to Newman who was still sitting in his Ford Mustang. Bowyer unleashed a flurry of punches, then walked away as Newman climbed out of the car.

Both drivers were called to the NASCAR hauler.

“The 14 (Bowyer) chopped me on the front straightaway earlier in the race and I just about turned him around. If I wouldn’t have hit the brakes I would have turned him around,” said Newman. “And then after I just went up and tapped him in the back [to] let him know I didn’t appreciate the way he raced me, he body slammed me. Then I hit him back a little bit on the back straightaway, and then he just cut across my nose in Turn 3.

“Doesn’t take much of a man to try to fight somebody with a helmet on; I think he should be embarrassed.”
