Kyle Larson led the way in opening Cup Series practice Friday at Richmond Raceway with a lap of 121.704 mph (22.185 seconds).

Larson was one of only three Chevrolets in the top 10 during the 50-minute session.

Second fastest was Denny Hamlin at 121.682 mph with Chris Buescher third quick at 121.638 mph. Completing the top five were defending race winner Kyle Busch at 121.611 mph and David Ragan at 121.518 mph.

The rest of the top 10 were Daniel Suarez 121.490 mph, Martin Truex Jr. at 121.447 mph, Kurt Busch at 121.370 mph, Kevin Harvick at 121.294 mph, and Joey Logano at 121.218 mph.

Five drivers had to serve practice holds during the session. Ryan Newman, Ragan, Larson, and Jeb Burton (who’s in the No. 51) all lost the final 15 minutes for their cars being late to inspection.

Harvick was docked 30 minutes because of his car failing pre-race inspection multiple times last weekend.

Chase Elliott, 24th fastest, ran the most laps at 68.

UP NEXT: Final practice at 1:05 p.m. ET.
