Sauber has announced it will launch its 2019 car on the opening day of pre-season testing in Barcelona.
Last year Sauber opted for an online launch in the week ahead of the first test, but the team has decided the 2019 chassis will be unveiled 40 minutes before the start of testing on Monday, February 18 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The launch will take place in the pit lane, where a number of teams often roll out their cars for photo opportunities.
This year Sauber will have an all-new driver line-up, with 2007 drivers’ champion Kimi Raikkonen rejoining the team from Ferrari as Charles Leclerc moves in the other direction. Raikkonen will be partnered by Italian Antonio Giovinazzi, who made two appearances for the team as a replacement for the injured Pascal Wehrlein at the start of the 2017 season.
In announcing its plans, Sauber becomes the fifth team to confirm its launch date, with Renault currently unveiling its new car first on February 12. Racing Point will then have a launch event in Toronto on February 13, ahead of McLaren and Ferrari taking the covers off their cars on February 14 and 15 respectively.
Mercedes is set to carry out an online launch but has yet to confirm a date, while the likes of Toro Rosso and Haas have traditionally rolled out their new cars in the Barcelona pit lane ahead of the start of testing.
