Lauda discharged from hospital

Three-time Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda has been discharged from hospital in Vienna following treatment for influenza.

The Mercedes non-executive chairman underwent a lung transplant in August of last year and has been recuperating since, but was taken ill while on holiday in Ibiza earlier this month. Lauda was admitted to Vienna General Hospital – the same hospital where he had his transplant – for treatment.

The hospital confirmed that the 69-year-old had been discharged on Wednesday after a little under two weeks receiving care.

Lauda – world champion in 1975 and 1977 with Ferrari and again in 1984 with McLaren – has not been present at a grand prix since last year’s lung transplant, but had targeted a return to working with Mercedes at this year’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix in March.
