Gasly to use predecessors to gauge Red Bull approach

Pierre Gasly says he will use the different ways Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen worked with Red Bull to hone his own approach next season.

2019 will see Gasly step up to Red Bull as a replacement for Ricciardo, who is leaving to join Renault on a two-year deal. Gasly follows in the footsteps of Vettel, Ricciardo and Verstappen in being promoted from Toro Rosso but also has experience of being Red Bull’s reserve driver in the past and now the season is over he says he will reflect on the approach of previous drivers to work out how to best integrate himself with the team.

“I didn’t want to think too much about it because the targets are going to be completely different,” Gasly said. “I don’t want to mix my mind with different expectations or targets I will have next year compared to this season. So, I didn’t really think about it.

“Of course, when I was reserve driver, I was really looking at many things in the drivers’ behavior — the way they worked, the way they approached the weekend. I saw Seb working with the team. I saw Max, Daniel, so I could see a bit the different personalities and kind of know what worked for each of them, and what wasn’t so great. Or what the team didn’t like so much.

“I’ll try to take a bit of the positives from every one, and work with that … Over the winter I’ll take more time to make sure I come with the right approach for next year.”

While excited for his new challenge in a team that won four races this season, Gasly says he will miss the Italian family spirit at Toro Rosso.

“I am someone that is quite emotional and I worked with Prema in GP2, an Italian factory team. Toro Rosso is the same. You can really feel the passion and it is of course different from Ferrari, but in terms of passion you can really feel the same inside the team.

“Emotions run really high or low, but it just keeps you going and gives you a lot of different feelings throughout the season. That is something I really like. Red Bull is slightly different. Maybe it is going to be the same, I don’t know yet. I’ll tell you next year.”
