IMSA salutes new Hypercar rules; doubles down on DPi

IMSA has offered its congratulations to the ACO and FIA on the announcement of its new ‘Hypercar’ regulations that will replace the current LMP1 formula in 2020.

“IMSA would like to congratulate our partners at the ACO and FIA on the announcement of the regulations for their new category of cars,” said IMSA president Scott Atherton. “We have appreciated the opportunity to be an active participant of the Technical Working Group which developed these regulations for the new 2020 Hypercar.”

As an invited member of the ACO/FIA group that defined the 2020 regulations, IMSA hoped the 2020 rules that were revealed in July would be feasible for the NASCAR-owned endurance racing organization. The costly Hypercar regulations – compared to IMSA’s Daytona Prototype international formula – ratified today by the FIA appear to confirm that any hope of uniting the ACO, FIA World Endurance Championship, and IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship under a single prototype formula has been abandoned.

Although IMSA stopped short of publicly stating its disinterest in the Hypercar rules, Atherton did reaffirm the WeatherTech Championship’s intent to stick with its domestic prototype plans after the Hypercar formula comes to fruition.

“We continue to be committed to the growth of sports car racing worldwide with a focus on maintaining a thrilling and sustainable North American championship,” he added. “Our DPi and LMP2 cars have a current homologation through the end of our 2021 season, so there is time for current and potential DPi manufacturers to evaluate these regulations as we look ahead to any possible evolution of the current platform.”
