The chaos has begun at the Charlotte road course.
Kyle Busch led an eventful opening practice session for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with a lap of 106.397 mph. Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Erik Jones was second quick at 106.382 mph.
Completing the top five were Joey Logano (106.122 mph), Daniel Hemric (106.081 mph) and Clint Bowyer (106.012 mph). Hemric is driving a third Richard Childress Racing entry this weekend in what will be his second career start.
Rounding out the top 10 were Kyle Larson (106.005 mph), Jimmie Johnson (105.955 mph), Chase Elliott (105.666 mph), Jamie McMurray (105.421 mph), and Trevor Bayne (105.390 mph).
Multiple drivers encountered trouble during the 50-minute session.
Darrell Wallace Jr. spun twice. Aric Almirola and Ryan Newman both damaged the rear of their cars.
Ryan Blaney damaged the left front fender of his Ford when he hit the tire barrier at the exit of the backstretch chicane. Austin Dillon, after getting off track near Turn 5 early in the session and brushing the wall, also heavily damaged his left front by hitting the tire barrier.
Denny Hamlin damaged his splitter going over the curb in the backstretch chicane. And Ricky Stenhouse Jr. spun off Turn 4 and backed his car into the barrier.
