Kyle Busch tops opening Richmond practice


Kyle Busch was quickest in the opening Cup Series practice session at Richmond Raceway with a lap of 121.190 mph.

Busch is a five-time winner at Richmond, including the most recent race at the short track in the spring.


Second and third fastest behind Busch were fellow playoff drivers Aric Almirola and Erik Jones. Almirola ran a quick lap of 120.968 mph. Jones put down a lap of 120.697 mph.

Completing the top five were Ty Dillon (120.514 mph) and AJ Allmendinger (120.273 mph).

Daniel Suarez was sixth fastest at 120.117 mph. Playoff drivers Kurt Busch (120.059 mph), Martin Truex Jr. (120.059 mph), Kyle Larson (119.909 mph), and Alex Bowman (119.691 mph) rounded out the top 10.

Truex suffered a flat right front tire early in the session but was able to limp back to the garage. The No. 78 did not have any significant damage.

Other playoff drivers in the session: Brad Keselowski was 14th on the speed chart, Chase Elliott 15th, Clint Bowyer 16th, Kevin Harvick 17th, Austin Dillon 18th, Denny Hamlin 20th, Ryan Blaney 22nd, Joey Logano 24th, and Jimmie Johnson 25th.

There were no major incidents during the 50-minute session.
