After topping the times in Friday’s first session of the weekend, Toyota Gazoo Racing once again ran fastest in the second WEC practice for the 6 Hours of Silverstone.
The fastest of the two TS050 HYBRIDs was again the No. 7, this time Jose Maria Lopez setting the fastest lap of 1m38.536s, 1.3 seconds faster than the sister No.8 which ended up second.
Third on the screens and fastest of the LMP1 privateer runners was the No. 17 SMP Racing BR1. Despite suffering drive train issues, Egor Orudzhev still managed to set a 1m40.179s to get within 1.6 seconds of the fastest Toyota. The Russian’s time was almost a second faster than the best privateer time from FP1.
The No. 3 Rebellion R-13 Gibson, which ran fastest of the privateers in the first session, ended up fourth with a 1m41.369s.
Two LMP1 cars didn’t make it out in FP2: the No. 1 Rebellion R-13, which is undergoing repairs following Bruno Senna’s FP1 incident at Copse, and the No.4 ByKolles ENSO CLM. The Austrian LMP1 car, which caught fire during the first session and spread oil on the track, wasn’t repaired in time.
In LMP2, it was the No. 38 Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECA which led the way, with a 1m45.311s set by Gabriel Aubry, four tenths up on the No. 36 Signatech Alpine which ended up second. The No.28 TDS Racing ORECA made it an 1-2-3 for 07 Gibson chassis. Once again, the Dallara and Ligier in the class from Racing Team Nederland and Larbre Competition ended up sixth and seventh.
GTE Pro saw a bit of a change up top. The No. 67 Ford was the quickest of the bunch, but the Aston Martins managed to mix in this time as the No. 97 of Maxime Martin and Alex Lynn finished second and within a tenth of the 1m56.898s set by Harry Tincknell to lead the session.
The No. 95 Aston Martin of Maxime Martin and Nicki Thiim also ran well, and finished up the day fourth fastest with a 1m57.281s. While it was an encouraging display by Aston Martin, BMW was still off the pace; MTEK’s pair of M8 GTEs were ninth and 10th in the class.
Dempsey Proton Racing set the benchmark in GTE Am, with a 1m59.105s by Matteo Cairoli, who turned the class’ fastest lap in Free Practice 1.
The FIA WEC track action at Silverstone continues tomorrow morning at 9:00am UK time (4 a.m. ET) with the third and final Free Practice session.
