Jones leads opening Cup practice at Watkins Glen

Erik Jones ran a lap of 125.165mph at Watkins Glen International to lead the way in opening Cup Series practice.

The fast time for Jones came on his 18th and final lap in practice, which was a mock qualifying run.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch was second fastest at 124.255mph. Joey Logano clocked in third at 123.654mph.

Clint Bowyer was fourth fastest at 123.545mph, and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top five at 123.434mph. Truex is the defending race winner.

Completing the top 10 were Daniel Suarez (123.427mph), Denny Hamlin (123.389mph), Jamie McMurray (123.176mph), Michael McDowell (123.126mph) and AJ Allmendinger (123.067mph).

The session was stopped once for an incident involving Ryan Newman. Newman hit the guardrail in the Esses and damaged the right side of his Chevrolet. The team is going to fix the car before final practice.
