A busy weekend in motorsports also had to contend with the media feeding frenzy over the World Cup final.
NASCAR avoided a direct head to head with football, er, soccer, by racing on Saturday at Kentucky Speedway, but the Monster Energy Cup Series race on Saturday night scored a 1.33 rating and averaged 2.3 million viewers on NBCSN. That’s down from a 1.62/2.7m for this race last year and NBC Sports’ first decline of the year after upticks from its first two Cup weekends.
The Verizon IndyCar Series race from Toronto on NBCSN (which aired after the footie final in which France bested Croatia) scored a 0.29 rating and averaged 458,000 viewers. That’s down from a 0.32/489,000 last year.
The ABB Formula E Championship got a rare live broadcast network appearance for Race 1 from Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, and the FOX telecast scored an 0.31 rating and averaged 412,000 viewers. (Numbers from Sunday’s race on FS1 were not available). Last year FOX aired the Sunday race, which did a few ticks better at 0.33/477,000.
And in case you were wondering, the World Cup final Sunday morning on FOX scored an 8.3 overnight rating and peaked at 14,620,000 viewers while averaging 11,824,000 viewers across FOX and streaming sources, according to the network, which also noted that it was the most-watched non-NFL telecast of any kind on FOX in 2018, and the most-watched telecast on television since the NBA Finals among Men, Women and Adults 18-34 and 18-49.
