Ryan Blaney was fastest in opening Monster Energy Series practice at Chicagoland Speedway with a lap of 178.992 mph.
Blaney jumped to the top of the board late in the 50-minute session, the first of two for the weekend. Jimmie Johnson was second fastest at 178.861 mph after holding the top spot for a majority of the session.
Completing the top five were Hendrick Motorsports drivers Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott, who ran identical laps of 178.749 mph, and Daniel Suarez at 177.725 mph.
Ryan Newman (177.445 mph), Denny Hamlin (177.357 mph), Kyle Larson (177.299 mph), Joey Logano (177.055 mph) and Jamie McMurray (177.055) were the rest of the top 10.
Last year’s pole-sitter Kyle Busch was 18th on the chart at 175.587 mph.
Defending race winner Martin Truex Jr. was 19th fastest at 175.421 mph.
Landon Cassill and BJ McLeod served 15-minute penalties in the session for their cars being late to pre-race inspection last week.
