Wickens leads third Road America practice

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ Robert Wickens flirted with the lead on Friday and finally moved his No. 6 Honda to the front in the final practice season ahead of qualifying for the Kohler Grand Prix at Road America.

The Canadian rookie (1m42.9915s) pipped Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay (+0.1810s) in the No. 28 Honda and Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud completed the top three with his No. 22 Chevy (+0.1878s).

The rest of the top 10 featured a mix of Chevys and Hondas as Andretti’s Alexander Rossi claimed fourth (+0.1917s), while Graham Rahal was fifth in his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing entry (+0.2051s) as close times set under warm blue skies gave an indicator of what’s coming later in the afternoon.

Penske’s Will Power was sixth (+0.4611s), Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon was seventh (+0.5564s), Andretti rookie Zach Veach was a strong eighth (+0.5928s), SPM’s James Hinchcliffe was ninth (+0.6059s) and Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais was 10th (+0.6098s).

The 45-minute session was clean until the final moments when Veach spun in Turn 13 and triggered a brief red flag.
