Former Juncos Racing Pro Mazda driver Jeff Green died Saturday following an accident in a Formula 5000 vintage race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. He was 61.
Durham Regional Police say Green lost control of his 1972 Lola T300, left the track and crashed into a tire barrier during the VARAC (Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada) Vintage Grand Prix race. The cause of the crash has not been determined.
Track safety officials and medical personal attended to Green at the scene. He needed to be extricated from the car and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In a press release, Durham Regional Police said Green’s Lola had passed a safety inspection before taking to the track.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jeffrey Green,” said Myles Brandt, president and general manager of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. “We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends and fellow competitors.”
Juncos Racing, for whom Green raced in 2017, offered condolences on social media, saying “We are devastated with the passing of Jeff Green, our former 2017 Pro Mazda driver. Jeff was an incredible man, who had a contagious smile and was an extremely genuine and kind person. Our entire family sends our thoughts & prayers to his family during this difficult time.”
Green played an important role in the Mazda Road to Indy career of last year’s teammate Victor Franzoni, helping the young driver financially and as a mentor while the 22-year-old Brazilian went on to win the 2017 Pro Mazda Championship.
Franzoni called Green “an inspiration.”
