Simon Pagenaud led the Team Penske/Chevrolet train in Tuesday’s opening round of practice for the 102nd Indianapolis 500, while Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan paced the no-tow speeds.
Pagenaud ran 225.787mph in the Menard’s Chevy while running in traffic and teammates Helio Castroneves and Josef Newgarden were a couple mph behind but still second and third quickest during the two-hour session for veterans.
Castroneves turned 223.445mph and Newgarden 223.229 as 21 cars posted speeds.
Marco Andretti was the fastest Honda at 223.214mph for Andretti Auto-sport, followed by Ed Carpenter at 223.124mph in the Fuzzy’s Chevy.
Graham Rahal ran 221.126mph in the United Rentals Honda with no tow and teammate Takuma Sato was second at 220.706 mph.
Practice was stopped briefly for rain and a track inspection but there were no incidents.
Rookie Zachary Claman De Melo was beginning his rookie test during the 1-3 p.m, session which is also open for refresher tests.
