After three sessions from IMSA’s return to Mid-Ohio, it’s three 1-2 performances by Acura Team Penske atop the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship field.
The internecine battle has seen the Nos. 6 and 7 Acura ARX-05s trade fastest laps, and in Saturday morning’s overcast but warm practice outing – the last before qualifying – Dane Cameron turned up the wick in the No. 6, dropping the team’s fastest lap from Friday (1m13.601s) by almost one full second (1m12.675s).
Helio Castroneves was just a fraction behind in the No. 7 Acura (+0.088s), and third offered a pleasant surprise as Mazda’s No. 55 RT24-P driven by Jonathan Bomarito moved forward (+1.092s).
The fastest non-DPi went to CORE autosport in fourth place with its ORECA 07-Gibson (+1.265s) driven by Colin Braun.
Like Acura in Prototype, the Porsche GT Team has swept all three sessions with its 911 RSR model. Porsche’s Earl Bamber led the GT Le Mans charge in his No. 912 entry (1m18.590s), and had comfortable margins over Corvette Racing’s No. 3 Corvette C7.R driven by Antonio Garcia (+0.382s) and BMW Team RLL’s Jesse Krohn in the No. 24 BM8 GTLM (+0.521s).
In GT Daytona, three newcomers to the top three emerged as Madison Snow No. 48 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 (1m20.400s) edged the 3GT Lexus RC F duo Kyle Marcelli in the No. 14 (+0.017) and Jack Hawksworth in the No. 15 (+0.137s.).
Other than a modest bump from behind as the No. 7 Acura DPi looked to get past the No. 54 P2 in the infield, the one-hour session was free from carnage and caution flags.
