Multi-car crash in final Cup practice sends several to backup cars

Four of the fastest six cars in final practice did not make it to the end of the session in one piece.

Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Ty Dillon and Daniel Suarez all will go to backup cars after a scary crash down the backstretch.

McMurray appeared to blow a left rear tire, sending his No. 1 Chevrolet spinning to the left. Hit in the left-side door by Newman, he was then sent airborne and barrel-rolled multiple times and hit the catchfence on the inside wall. He walked away uninjured.

Dillon’s car was damaged as he was spun from behind while trying to slow down. Dillon had been fastest in Friday’s opening practice session.

Suarez also suffered damage in the accident.

Before the accident, McMurray went to the top of the chart with a lap of 203.975 mph with Dillon second fastest at 103.610 mph. Suarez was third fastest at 203.079 mph.

Completing the top five were Erik Jones at 202.830 mph and Martin Truex Jr. at 202.770 mph.

Newman was sixth fastest at 202.714 mph.

The rest of the top 10 were Paul Menard (202.645 mph), Brendan Gaughan (202.530 mph), Kevin Harvick (202.294 mph) and Aric Almirola (202.230 mph). Gaughan is making another appearance in the Beard Motorsports No. 62 Chevrolet.

Final practice results can be found here.
