Elliott leads opening Richmond practice

Chase Elliott was fastest Friday morning at Richmond Raceway in the opening practice session for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

The quick lap for Elliott was 121.327mph while Kyle Larson ran 121.076 clocking in second-fastest. While Elliott is still looking for his first Cup Series win, Larson enters Richmond as its most recent winner (September). Completing the top five were Martin Truex Jr. (120.757mph), Jamie McMurray (120.703mph), and Joey Logano (120.660mph).

Results

Logano is the defending race winner at Richmond. Not only that, the No. 22 Team Penske group has been winless since.

Rounding out the top 10 were Kevin Harvick (120.654mph), Kyle Busch (120.471mph), Kasey Kahne (120.466mph), Chris Buescher (120.139mph), and Brad Keselowski (120.075mph).

There were no incidents in the 50-minute session.

Making his Cup Series debut this weekend, Daniel Hemric was 23rd fastest in the session. His Richard Childress Racing teammates, Ryan Newman and Austin Dillon, were just ahead on the speed chart in 20th and 21st-place, respectively.

In the best 10 consecutive lap average, Kevin Harvick led the way over Chase Elliott, Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Alex Bowman.
