For the third time this season, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will start the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race in his backup car after a crash in practice.

Saturday morning, Stenhouse found trouble off Turn 4 at Texas Motor Speedway and heavily damaged the right side of his No. 17 Ford. Over the radio, Stenhouse told his Roush Fenway team it felt as if the right-front tire had gone down because the car would not turn.

Stenhouse has also started in the rear with a backup car at Martinsville and ISM (Phoenix) Raceway.

Daniel Suarez was fastest in the 55-minute session, the first of two scheduled for Saturday. Suarez topped the leaderboard with a lap of 198.998mph.

Completing the top five were Denny Hamlin (198.800mph), William Byron (198.741mph), Jimmie Johnson (198.639mph) and Kevin Harvick (198.180mph). Johnson won this race last season while Harvick is looking for his second straight victory at Texas, having been the winner in the fall.

The rest of the top 10 were Erik Jones (198.165mph), Joey Logano (198.049mph), Kyle Larson (198.027mph), Stenhouse (197.889mph), and Ryan Blaney (197.817mph).

Polesitter Kurt Busch was 12th fastest in the session.

NEXT UP: Final practice at 1:30 p.m. ET.
