Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray swept the top two spots in the only practice session on Friday at ISM Raceway.

Larson’s fastest lap of 138.281mph came as time expired in the session to take the top spot. McMurray had previously run a lap of 137.762mph.

Kyle Busch ended the session third-fastest at 137.662mph, and Hendrick Motorsports teammates William Byron and Chase Elliott completed the top five with laps of 137.620mph and 137.615mph respectively.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. brought out a brief caution during the 50-minute session when his No. 17 hit the Turn 3 wall. Stenhouse had not yet completed a lap when his Ford did not turn into the corner. He will go to a backup car for Sunday’s race.

“I was really having issues with the brakes going down the front straightaway getting up to speed and I felt OK going into Turn 1 and then going into Turn 3 something in the left front kept locking up,” said Stenhouse. “Hopefully we’ll go back and look at it and be able to see what was wrong with it. But definitely not the way we wanted to start our weekend.

“We’ve had issues here in the past in practice and qualifying and we tend to race pretty well. So, we’ll get our backup Fastenal Ford out there and get ready to qualify later today.”

Completing the top 10 on the chart were Joey Logano (137.420mph), Denny Hamlin (137.415mph), Ryan Blaney (137.242mph), Clint Bowyer (137.232mph) and Martin Truex Jr. (137.169mph).

Defending race winner Ryan Newman was 15th in the session at 136.711mph.
