First Daytona 500 stage ends in wreck

A crash on the final lap of the first stage collected several drivers, including two-time Daytona 500 winner Jimmie Johnson.

The accident started when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. slid to the inside lane to try and block Ryan Blaney. Two two made contact, sending Stenhouse up the track and Blaney below the yellow line – and while those two were able to save themselves, the cars behind them had nowhere to go.

Also involved were William Byron, Erik Jones and Daniel Suarez, and Martin Truex Jr., and Ty Dillon and Kyle Larson suffered damage.

“It looked like everybody thought that was the finish of the Daytona 500 and it was really only lap 59 coming to 60,” Johnson said after his release from the infield care center. “Unfortunately, we lost our third car for the weekend. It’s unfortunate it has turned out that way, but we will get this Lowes for Pros Chevy dialed in for Atlanta and go do it again.”

It’s the third wrecked car during Speedweeks for Johnson, who crashed in the Advance Auto Parts Clash and wrecked out of his Can-Am Duel qualifying race Thursday evening when he cut a right rear tire.

Kurt Busch won Stage 1, followed by Alex Bowman and Stenhouse.
