Turner Motorsport Pre-Watkins Glen Report

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

The two M6 GT3s of Turner Motorsport are ready to resume racing action at the American road racing Mecca, Watkins Glen International, for round five of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this coming Sunday.

The four driver lineup of Michael Marsal, Bret Curtis, Markus Paltalla and Jens Klingmann return behind the wheel of their blue and yellow BMWs for the first time in almost one month since the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic in Detroit, Michigan.

The six-hour endurance challenge on the 3.40-mile, 11-turn road course marks the third round of the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Championship in which the blue and yellow Turner BMWs have had much success in previous years.

Turner BMWs have led laps in each of their previous four appearances in the Sahlen’s Six Hours at Watkins Glen to capture a second place finish in 2012 and a dominant win in 2014 in which drivers Markus Palttala and Dane Cameron lead 169 out of 178 laps.

This year, Michael Marsal and Markus Palttala in the No. 97 M6 GT3 and Bret Curtis with Jens Klingmann in the No. 96 M6 GT3 are poised to continue the strong steak of success in the six-hour endurance test.

Entering the weekend, the No. 96 IHG Rewards Club BMW of Curtis and Klingmann sits seventh in the GTD points standings with 93 points. The No. 97 Alvarez & Marsal / H&R Springs BWW of Marsal and Palttala sits eighth, tied with the No. 96 with 93 points after four rounds.

“I’m eager to get back to the Glen this year, especially after testing here last month,” said Michael Marsal. “The new surface is incredible and really suits our M6 GT3s very well. We always seem to have a strong package for this event so I’m cautiously optimistic that we can capture a strong result this weekend and walk away with some solid points.”

Bret Curtis added, “This will be my first race at Watkin’s Glen so I’m really looking forward to getting on track with the No. 96 M6 and see what Jens (Klingmann) and I can put together for a setup. The test last month proved to be very useful to get some seat time to begin to learn this track. Hopefully the test, recent BoP adjustments and data we collected will translate into some good results for our BMW.”

Both the No. 96 and No. 97 Turner BMWs will revert back to their traditional blue and yellow liveries for round five after carrying the white, red and black aFe Livery on the No. 96 for the past two events.

“Watkins Glen is always a track that we really look forward to racing at every year,” said Will Turner. “The new M6 GT3 was strong in testing here at the Glen so with the right strategy calls and maybe a little bit of luck we should see some good results this weekend.”

The WeatherTech Championship on-track action will kick off on Friday with the first GTD practice at 11:25am ET. The GTD class qualifying will be LIVE on IMSA.com on Saturday, July 2nd at 3:40pm ET and the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen will go green at 10:10am on Sunday, July 3rd to be broadcast LIVE from 10:00am to 4:30pm ET on Fox Sports 1.

Stay tuned as the team prepares for the next round of the 2016 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship via all our social channels.
