The three key partners behind the Mazda Road To Indy series have come together to donate more than $10,000 to the Wilson Children’s Fund which supports the family of the late Verizon IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson.
Mazda’s John Doonan, Andersen Promotions’ Dan Andersen, and Cooper Tires’ Chris Pantani made the presentation Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to Wilson family representative Matt Cleary, and to Wilson’s close friend and colleague Barry Waddell.
“Like the rest of the motorsports community, Mazda, Dan Andersen, Chris Pantani, and all of the executives from our companies recognize the loss the Wilson family has experienced, we are all family members in this sport, and when someone in your family has a need, you rise up to take care of them,” Doonan said.
“This is about taking care of Justin’s family as time moves forward. His loss has hit the community hard because of the way he carried himself as a professional and as a person. All of us should carry on the example he set in our lives to honor him, and all of us are better people for knowing Justin Wilson.”
Although Wilson never raced a Mazda-powered car, he did drive a Mazda pace car at a karting event where he and Doonan served as judges.
“I was shocked when I heard Mazda had chosen to donate to the Wilson Children’s Fund,” said Justin’s younger brother Stefan Wilson. “As far as I know, Justin had never raced for Mazda, so for them to make this gesture of support to his family, shows us once again just how far the respect Justin earned has reached. It’s very generous of Mazda. The family is extremely grateful for this donation, and the countless other donations made by friends & fans all over the world.”
