He left it late in the session, but Will Power grabbed top spot for Team Penske-Chevrolet with a 1min17.8107sec lap in Sunday morning warm-up for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
The polesitter, like most of the field, spent a lot of the session on-track, rather than doing the traditional multiple pit stop practice, as everyone sought data on tire wear around the 2.52-mile course. Takuma Sato’s late run put AJ Foyt Racing-Honda into P2, with Penske’s Simon Pagenaud third, just ahead of Graham Rahal’s Rahal Letterman Lanigan entry which received a new Honda last night.
After a weekend of tepid performance, KV Racing-Chevy’s Sebastien Bourdais was in strong form, leading most of the session and only slipping to fifth in the final minutes.
James Jakes suffered gearbox issues in his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda.
NBCSN coverage of the race starts at 1.00pm PST with green flag at 2.05pm.
