It was a busy weekend for NASCAR’s premier stock car and sports car properties on road courses where the Sprint Cup series, Xfinity Series, and IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship raced at iconic circuits. MotoGP also made its annual appearance at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway using the road course layout, and the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Series visited the Northwest at Pacific Raceways on the outskirts of Seattle.
Of the five series, Sprint Cup’s Cheez-It 355 generated the greatest audience with 3,982,000 viewers Sunday on NBCSN. 4,939,000 viewers watched the race on ESPN in 2014.
On the NASCAR Xfinity side, Saturday’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen produced 1,361,000 viewers on NBCSN.
IMSA’s TUDOR Championship followed a familiar pattern on cable as Sunday’s three-hour Continental Tire Road Race Showcase broadcast from Road America was viewed by a modest audience of 106,000 on FoxSports 1.
The Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, also on FoxSports1, fared better in the hours leading up to the IMSA event with a peak of 161,000 viewers. The NHRA’s Northwest Nationals generated 531,000 viewers on ESPN2.
NASCAR is the primary domestic series in action on live TV this weekend. IndyCar, IMSA, and the NHRA off until August 22-23. Formula 1 also returns from its break in 10 days.
