Michael Schumacher doctor reports progress in his recovery

By

Prof. Jean-Francois Payen, a doctor at the French hospital in Grenoble who was on the medical team that treated Michael Schumacher for nearly six months following his brain injury suffered in a skiing accident in France last December, says the F1 champion has made “some progress,” although he cautioned that the recovery period could extend from one to three years.

Schumacher, 45, was skiing in the French Alps when he fell and hit his head on a rock. The seven-time world champion from Germany was placed in a medically induced coma to help reduce swelling in his brain. After being brought out of the coma by doctors, Schumacher returned to his home in Switzerland to continue his convalescence.

“I have noted some progress but I would say we should give him time,” Payen – who has continued to visit Schumacher to follow his recovery – said Thursday in interviews with French radio network RTL and the Le Parisien newspaper. “We are on a (recovery) timescale which goes from one year to three years and we need to be patient.” he said.
