Jake Parsons and Colton Herta, the two winners at Sepang’s AsiaCup Series at the weekend, are set to go head to head again in two weeks, this time at Sebring. Both are testing for Cape Motorsports, the junior formula team that is a partnership with Wayne Taylor Racing.
Herta, who ran this season in USF2000, is trying out for a different team while Parsons, who leads the AsiaCup Series in Malaysia, is doing a half day in the USF2000 car, and the other half in the team’s Pro Mazda car, on Sept. 29.
“The Cape brothers have proven themselves to be one of the best teams out there,” said 14-year old Herta. “They’ve won consecutive championships, and almost won the Pro Mazda championship this year, which they just stepped into. They’ve had good drivers and they seem like they know their way around the car, so I’m excited to test for them and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
Parsons, from Sydney, Australia, has won seven of eight AsiaCup Series races this year, his record only upset by Herta at the Sepang F1 circuit on Sept 13. He is considering a move to IndyCar’s Mazda Road to Indy.
“I have tested previously with Cape in F1600 about two years ago now. It was one of my first drives in a racecar, and I set quick times, so it will be good to see them again. I’m in the F2000 for half a day, and then switch over to the Pro Mazda for the second half, get the feel for the two, and give me a good idea of where the categories are at, and what I want to do for next year.
“Racing in America definitely interests me, it would be an exciting place to go and race. There and Europe are probably the two top places.”
