Indy 500: Dollar General to back Villeneuve entry

Dollar General will serve as primary sponsor of the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry to be driven by Jacques Villeneuve in the Indianapolis 500 next month, the discount retailer announced Wednesday.

Villeneuve, who will participate in a refresher session April 29 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, won the 1995 race and was the runner-up as a rookie in ’94. He is returning to the “500” for the first time since his victory 19 years ago.

“I have so many wonderful memories of racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway throughout my career, including my last appearance at the track in the Brickyard 400 when I also was sponsored by Dollar General,” Villeneuve said. “It’s been 19 years since I ran this race, but returning with a team like Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and a household-name sponsor like Dollar General is going to give me a fantastic opportunity to perform at a high level.”

Although Dollar General has served as a primary sponsor of Indy cars in the past, suchas Josef Newgarden’s 2012 Indy 500 entry for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing (pictured), its primary sponsorship involvement is now in NASCAR, where it backs Matt Kenseth’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
