DSC’s Richard Leach might have got something of a scoop as he trawled the paddock at Snetterton on Thursday.
A couple of German registered Mercedes Benz road cars (including a AMG CLA 45) raised an eyebrow, and with rain in the air, the road car was seeing most track action but once the weather improved, the mysterious squad in the garage did put the racing version of the car out on track for a few short runs with secrecy in mind: Door up, car out for a few laps, pit, straight into garage, door down.
It seems that this is the first track shot of the new Mercedes Benz MG CLA 45 Racing Series ‘turnkey’ racer powered by a 360hp turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder engine. But why was the German manufacturers’ new production based racer testing at a rainy Snetterton instead of somewhere in Deutschland?
Reports suggest that the locally-based offshoot of Canadian racing car and damper manufacturer Multimatic have a hand in the CLA 45’s competition-spec suspension. But there are still unanswered questions–RWD or 4WD?
And where will the cars be seen racing first? German sources suggest North America with the Pirelli World Challenge series and IMSA’s Continental Tire Series and Germany’s VLN championship as likely options.
