F1 pole trophy introduced for 2014

By

Formula 1 is to go ahead with the introduction of a ‘pole trophy’ for the season’s top qualifier from 2014.

The idea had been mooted by the FIA earlier this month, and it has now been added to the world championship’s sporting regulations. The trophy will go to the driver with the most poles each year. In the event of a tie, it will be decided by the highest number of second places. Should countback fail to separate the two drivers, the regulations state that “the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it thinks fit.”

Sebastian Vettel would have won the pole award for four of the past five years had it existed, his run only interrupted by Lewis Hamilton in 2012.
