Franchitti leaves Houston hospital

Dario Franchitti’s five-day stay at Houston’s Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center came to an end on Thursday when the Scot was released after his bone-breaking crash during Sunday’s Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix.

“I’m overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and I’m thankful to have such a great family and such wonderful friends and fans,” said Franchitti upon being discharged. “Thanks to everyone at the hospital and the track who took such good care of me during my stay in Houston. I look forward to watching Scott, Alex [Tagliani, who was confirmed yesterday as his stand-in] and the Target team next weekend on television, and will be pulling for them as they go for another championship.”

The next step in the four-time IndyCar Series champion’s recovery is to be re-evaluated after he arrives home in Indianapolis. Additional surgery on his right ankle is pending, and a date has yet to be set.

On a lighter note, Franchitti found one unexpected piece of comfort while at the Houston hospital, telling this writer he’d taken a liking to the country fried steak that was being served. Coupled with the chocolate croissants his family brought to the hospital, Franchitti could be hard-pressed to match the gastronomic delights while recovering from ankle surgery in Indy.
