Aleix Espargaro says he is convinced Forward Racing’s new Yamaha program is his best option for the 2014 MotoGP season despite his success at Aspar.
Espargaro has been a class apart among the CRT pack for most of the year, and managed to qualify his lower-powered Aprilia on the second row of the grid at the Sachsenring and Misano. But the Spaniard is in talks to end his Aspar contract and switch to Forward, which has secured non-factory Yamahas for 2014.
“I feel really good in this team, I feel really competitive and it’s like a family, but sometimes you are motivated to ride another bike,” said Espargaro. “I think that’s the case. I feel like the other bike will be more competitive.”
Aspar is set to continue its relationship with Aprilia next season. Espargaro believes his situation could be resolved in the next few days.
“It’s not easy, both teams are in talks,” he said. “I think we are close but still nothing is decided. I hope in a couple of days we’ll have some news.”
Current Forward rider Colin Edwards is tipped to stay on as Espargaro’s teammate after his strong form in recent races.
