Corvette Racing stalwart Oliver Gavin will race his third different car in a week in this weekend’s ADAC GT Masters finale at Hockenheim.
Gavin doubled up on his Chevrolet American Le Mans Series commitments at Austin last weekend when he was drafted into the Aston Martin Racing lineup and will now drive the Chevrolet Camaro GT3 car developed by the Reiter Engineering team at Hockenheim.
The Camaro is entered under the spin-off SaReNi United banner by team owner Hans Reiter, who has long-standing links with Gavin stretching back into the 1990s. Reiter engineered Gavin during his DTM season with Opel in 1996 and subsequently used him to help develop his early Lamborghini Diablo and Murcielago GT racers in the early 2000s.
“We’ve been talking about me driving the Camaro again for a while,” said Gavin, who will share the Camaro with Reiter regular Albert von Thurn und Taxis. “He wants to get the car to the point where it is competitive.
“There was a problem making the car work on the hard Yokohama [the spec tyre in the ADAC], but the team tested a new softer tire yesterday [Wednesday], which appeared to unlock the performance. After that, they gave me a ring at 5 p.m. to say we were on for this weekend and could I get myself to Hockenheim.”
Gavin described the events of the past two weeks as “bizarre and surreal.”
“The funny thing is that everything seems to revolve around people I’ve raced against down the years. I was with Darren [Turner] and Stefan [Mucke] in Austin and this weekend Tomas Enge [another former AMR driver] is going to be my team manager. Darren thinks it’s hilarious that I am going to have Tomas telling me what to do.”
The SaReNi Camaro, which Reiter is billing as a low-cost GT3 racer, contested a full season in the ADAC series last year, but the car has been re-engineered for this year. It has contested two rounds so far at the Red Bull Ring and the Slovakia Ring.
Oliver Gavin and Peter Kox almost gave Reiter Engineering’s Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT a victory in its first race start at the 2004 Valencia FIA GT Championship round. The duo were on for victory when a switch was knocked off during the driver change at the final pit stop, the resulting delay leaving them third.
