Richard Petty protege Ryan Truex will make his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend with Phoenix Racing.
Truex, younger brother of Cup race-winner Martin, has contested partial Nationwide and Truck seasons in recent years after winning multiple titles further down the NASCAR ladder. His 2013 campaign, though, has been disrupted by a broken collarbone. The 21-year-old signed a multi-year development driver deal with Richard Petty Motorsports earlier this year.
“It will be a big night for Ryan,” said Petty. “He is a talented driver, and we look forward to his future with our team. We are working hard to find funding support to give him more opportunities behind the wheel.”
Truex will the eighth different driver to appear in the Phoenix Chevrolet this year, following in the footsteps of AJ Allmendinger, Regan Smith, Austin Dillon, Bobby Labonte, Jacques Villeneuve, Owen Kelly and Brendan Gaughan.
