Edwards lead rain-shortened Glen Cup practice

Carl Edwards set the pace on a rain-shortened NASCAR Sprint Cup practice day at Watkins Glen.

The scheduled pair of 90-minute Friday practice sessions became one of half an hour and one of 45 minutes due to morning rain at the second road course on the Cup calendar. Martin Truex Jr, who won the series’ previous road course event at Sonoma in June, was fastest in the brief opening session. The Michael Waltrip Toyota driver’s 1m09.319s lap was 1.1 seconds clear of second-placed Marcos Ambrose’s Petty Ford.

Edwards was third for Roush Fenway in that session, before jumping to the top on a 1m08.693s right at the end of practice two. That put him half a second ahead of surprise second-place man Michael McDowell, who has moved from the Parsons team to Front Row for this weekend.

Clint Bowyer completed the top three, ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya, Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson. Truex fell to 19th in practice two. Tony Stewart’s stand-in Max Papis (ABOVE, chatting with Ryan Newman and Martin Truex) was 30th fastest.

Among other entry changes for the Glen weekend is a Cup debut for Australian Owen Kelly with Phoenix Racing. He was 20th in the second session.
